It’s important to continue improving yourself so you can grow and become a better person. You should always be evolving and continually working to be your best self can help your mental and physical well-being, allowing you to be a more positive person overall.
A study from Stanford even showed that positivity can improve success by discovering that the brain pathway directly links positive attitude with achievement.
The study found that if you are more positive about something, chances are you’ll have a greater outcome than worrying, or using negativity. Although positivity doesn’t guarantee success, a positive attitude can help anyone improve memory or lessen their anxiety.
We’ve all had moments we’re not proud of—maybe you said something you shouldn’t have said or did the wrong thing. Sometimes we just let our anxiety get the best of us, and we go through life always worried about the next thing.
Everyone has made mistakes and we all get a little anxious sometimes, but the important part is recognizing it and working past them to better yourself.
Becoming a better person doesn’t mean you have to be perfect all the time.. You should just always start each day trying to be a little more positive than the last. Working towards being a better person takes time, so do it in steps by incorporating these easy tips into your day.
1. Compliment Someone
Don’t you feel good when someone compliments you? Not only does a compliment brighten someone’s day, but it also can make you feel good too and even boost your own self-esteem. Give someone a compliment by finding something genuine you like about them.
It doesn’t just have to be a physical attribute, like how they practice their own positivity, or maybe how they participate in meetings at work or always say hello to you in the office. By complimenting others you’ll be actively looking to see the good in people, helping you to be more positive overall.
2. Let Go
If you’re holding on to anything, regrets, guilt anger—let it go. Forgive yourself and others for anything that has happened in the past. Doing this can give you inner peace and allow you to move forward with a positive outlook.
It may not seem like holding on to these feelings affects you, but they impact you and your feelings towards others. By letting go you can start on a fresh slate, getting rid of any negativity.
3. Make Time for You
Yes, the road to becoming a better person means being a little selfish sometimes. If you’re not at your best for yourself because you’re overextended or stressed, then you can’t be your best for someone else. Take time out of every single day just for you.
Do something that relaxes you, something you enjoy—even if that means just watching your favorite TV show before you go to bed. Doing things like this gives you the chance to unwind so you can relax and start the next day fresh.
4. Learn Something New
Learning new skills helps your mind grow stronger by strengthening your neurological pathways—making your brain work faster and more efficiently. You should continually be learning to not only help your brain grow, but so you can grow as a person.
Don’t feel like in order to learn something new you have to pick up a textbook and take on quantum physics—instead try listening to a Podcast while you’re getting ready or driving to work. Think about a skill or a topic you’re interested in and start researching it because learning should be fun, and tailored to your own interests.
5. Listen
Listening and learning can go hand-in-hand together, just by actively listening to others you can also learn new things about them and even yourself. Listening can also help you learn a lot of skills without even knowing it.
When you listen you increase your emotional capacity by becoming more empathetic which can help you to be a more well-rounded person. You also practice patients, kindness, and even problem solving by helping someone as you listen. Try talking to your spouse, kids, or a coworker just by asking how their day is going and really listen to their answers.
6. Practice Self Love
While you’re actively complementing and listening to others, you should also do this for yourself. Give yourself a little love everyday, like complimenting yourself before you go to work or saying some affirmations in the morning. Self love not only boosts your self-esteem, but it’s even been linked to improving your mental and physical health.
Take the time to listen to yourself, instead of pushing it off address how you’re feeling and figure out what might be bothering you so you can correct it and feel better about yourself.
7. Set Goals
You should always set new goals for yourself. whether its daily, monthly or if they’re your new year’s resolutions. Throughout the year you should continually assess where you are and what you want moving forward.
In order to keep improving yourself, you need to set goals in order to grow as a person, and you don’t have to wait until January first. You can simply write down your goals and once a month reassess where you’re at and if those goals are still relevant, or if they’ve changed. Goals are fluid, so they can change and evolve. They also don’t have to be huge, sometimes the smallest goals make the biggest difference.
8. Practice Gratitude
Practicing gratitude can have numerous benefits on your mental health and can boost your overall positivity. Once a day, think of at least one thing you’re grateful for and really reflect on why you’re grateful for it.
Try doing this right when you get up in the morning to start your day on a positive note. If you keep practicing this daily, you’ll start practicing gratitude without even realizing it by noticing and appreciating more of the good things around you.
